Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched a new workplace messaging platform designed to compete with Slack by making artificial intelligence agents a central part of everyday collaboration.

Called Buzz, the app has been developed by Block, the fintech company founded by Dorsey, and offers familiar workplace tools including channels, discussion threads and direct messaging. It also supports voice communication, media sharing and code repositories.

The platform’s key difference is that AI agents are treated as active members of a team rather than simple assistants. Models from companies including OpenAI and Anthropic can be integrated into Buzz, allowing them to receive profiles, join channels and operate with specific permissions.

Dorsey wrote in a post on X: “We built it to reduce our dependency on Slack and GitHub, and we’re sharing it so anyone can do the same.

“We believe Buzz is truly social AI. The category so far has meant people chatting with AI companions, AI filling human feeds or chats, or agents talking to each other while people watch. People and agents as equal members of the same network doing work together feels like the first interesting and durable version.”

Buzz is open-source and decentralised, giving users greater control over the software and reducing reliance on a single company.

The approach reflects Dorsey’s growing interest in decentralised technology following his departure from Twitter, with previous projects including the social network Bluesky, crypto platform TBDex and peer-to-peer messaging app Bitchat.

Block’s Matt Ross said the platform could change how teams work after watching AI agents collaborate on projects.

He said: “Earlier today I watched several agents collaborate on a project in real time and work toward a solution together. This work product was then available to everyone on my team instantly to iterate on further. This is going to completely transform how we work.”

Some early users have described Buzz as a potential “Slack killer”, although the platform remains in the early stages of development and has yet to be tested at a large scale.
