CD Projekt Red has warned fans not to expect The Witcher 4 to appear exactly like it did in the Unreal Engine showcase, as the game is still in early development.

During its State of Unreal event earlier this month (06.03.25), CD Projekt Red wowed fans when it showcased a tech demo of its upcoming fantasy-RPG running on Unreal Engine 5, but engineering production manager Jan Hermanowicz has made clear that this footage was not representative of the final game.

Hermanowicz told GamesRadar+ what was seen of The Witcher 4 at State of Unreal “is a technological demo and not an actual game or gameplay”.

He added CD Projekt Red was “not guaranteeing that [The Witcher 4] will appear unchanged” when it launches.

Even so, Jan Hermanowicz emphasised the nation of Kovir seen in The Witcher 4’s State of Unreal showcase “will appear in the game” and is based on “actual assets from CD Projekt Red”.

The developer added the studio was being as transparent as possible with The Witcher 4’s tech demo due to the botched launch of Cyberpunk 2077 – which saw the game graphically underdeliver and suffer from performance issues when it hit consoles and PC in 2020.

Hermanowicz said: “We’re not calling this gameplay, we’re not pretending that this is the actual game. It is a technological demo.”

With The Witcher 4 still in early production, CDPR hasn’t disclosed a release window – estimates suggest it won’t launch before 2027.

Fans should expect more visual demonstrations as development progresses, but must temper expectations as what has been seen so far of the game is not final gameplay.
