PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst has insisted AI will never replace the “human touch” of video game developers.
Sony’s console was first released on December 3, 1994 and while artificial intelligence can “revolutionise” gaming, Hulst – PlayStation’s co-CEO with Hideaki Nishino – doesn’t think the technology can totally replace the human mind.
He told the BBC: “I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content.
“Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.”
The two bosses took over in June this year, with Hulst mainly in charge of software while Nishino oversees hardware.
Nishino insisted the duo “can achieve greater focus” in their respective areas before uniting “to develop the best experience” for PS gamers.
Last year, Strauss Zelnick – CEO of Take-Two Interactive, which owns Rockstar Games and 2K – opened up on how AI could transform the gaming industry.
He told Inverse.com at the time: “Everyone’s working on that.
“You’re a playable character, you’re interacting with the non-playable character. That interaction is currently scripted. And the non-playable characters are generally not very interesting. You could imagine all the NPCs becoming really interesting and fun.”
And in September 2023, Xbox vice president Sarah Bond suggested AI’s impact could be a positive one.
She told the same outlet: “You’re really going to see game development be further democratized by the power of AI.
“There’s going to be a game developer or game creator copilot that makes it easier for anybody to create a game, even if they are not deeply schooled in computer science or how to use Unity.”
