Microsoft’s AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has pushed back against growing criticism of Windows’ AI ambitions, saying he’s baffled by claims that Copilot and modern AI tools are “underwhelming”.
Responding to mounting frustration from Windows users, Suleyman posted on X that he finds it “mindblowing” people aren’t impressed by fluent, real-time conversations with advanced AI models – especially compared to the basic tech he grew up with.
He wrote: “Jeez there’s so many cynics! It cracks me up when I hear people call AI underwhelming.
“I grew up playing Snake on a Nokia phone! The fact that people are unimpressed that we can have a fluent conversation with a super smart AI that can generate any image/video is mindblowing to me.”
His comments land at a delicate moment, as earlier this month, Windows president Pavan Davuluri sparked backlash after touting Microsoft’s plan to evolve Windows into an “agentic OS”.
The reaction was so negative he disabled replies on his post, later acknowledging user concerns.
The criticism hasn’t been helped by a widely shared report from The Verge, which found that Copilot often fails to perform the seamless, context-aware tasks shown in Microsoft’s own advertisements.
Instead of acting as a reliable digital assistant, the report claimed Copilot frequently produces errors, misunderstandings or partial results – seemingly highlighting a gap between the company’s marketing and reality.
Despite the pushback, Microsoft is leaning harder than ever into its AI-first strategy.
The company recently unveiled Windows’ new tagline, “Your canvas for AI,” and says agent-driven features will shape the operating system’s future.
But many Windows fans argue the company is prioritising experimental AI tools over fixing long-standing issues with reliability, performance and UX clutter.
Davuluri has said Microsoft “has a lot of work to do,” particularly for developers and power users, but with the company positioning itself as an AI leader, critics remain unconvinced that a less AI-heavy Windows is on the horizon.
