OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone social app for its video generation model Sora 2.
According to WIRED, documents show the app features a vertical video feed with swipe-to-scroll navigation, closely resembling TikTok – except all content is AI-generated.
A For You-style page will reportedly be powered by a recommendation algorithm, while a side menu lets users like, comment, or remix clips.
The supposed app would allow people to generate short AI videos of up to 10 seconds using Sora 2, with no option to upload footage from their camera roll.
One of its most distinctive features is said to be identity verification, allowing users to confirm their likeness.
Verified users could then appear in AI-generated clips – such as riding a roller coaster with a friend – while receiving notifications whenever their likeness is used, even in unpublished drafts.
OpenAI has reportedly launched the app internally, where it has received “overwhelmingly positive feedback”.
Employees are said to be using it so frequently that some managers joked it was becoming a drain on productivity.
Industry insiders suggest OpenAI is positioning the app as a way for people to experience AI video in the same way ChatGPT popularised AI text.
Sources told WIRED that uncertainty over TikTok’s future in the US has given the company a unique opening to introduce its own short-form video platform.
The Sora 2 app would face stiff competition from rivals, as Meta recently launched Vibes, an AI video feed within its Meta AI app, while Google is rolling out its Veo 3 model into YouTube.
TikTok, meanwhile, has tightened its rules to ban misleading or harmful AI-generated videos.
OpenAI declined to comment on the reported app, which has no confirmed launch date.
