A Bollywood star has threatened legal action against people creating “deepfake content” of her likeness on social media.
Mrunal Thakur, who predominantly works in Hindi and Telugu films, has taken to X to bemoan the recent rise of X-rated deepfake content that appears on social media platforms, and she’s warned that any further “misuse of [her] identity will result in legal action”.
Thakur, 34 – who stars alongside Varun Dhawan and Pooja Hegde in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai – wrote on X: “Creating or sharing deepfake content using my likeness is illegal and unacceptable. Consider this your formal notice to stop immediately. Any further misuse of my identity will result in legal action.”
The actress – who has millions of followers across X and Instagram – subsequently encouraged her fans to help combat the problem.
She said: “Let’s build a little Hall of Fame for the internet’s finest minds.
“Girls and boys If you spot an account harassing anyone or sharing AI-generated or non-consensual intimate images, tag it below.
“Documentation is a beautiful thing. (sic)”
Earlier this year, meanwhile, a British MP argued that men in the UK need better protections against misogynistic content creators.
Alistair Strathern, the MP for Hitchin, observed that “some of the worst of the internet can prey on young men and boys”.
He said: “These harms are not just done to men and boys. This is a harm that impacts the women and girls in their life too. We are all losing out as a result of the failure to protect men and boys from some of the risks they face in the online world.”
Strathern called on Ofcom, the UK regulator, to do more to better protect young men.
He explained: “I think that the challenge to them is to show they’re taking this seriously.
“When there is clear evidence around the gendered aspects of harms affecting boys and men, as well as women and girls, and their job is to keep all of us safe on the internet, we think there’s a gap that they need to step up and act on.”
