Apple could reportedly lose its chip chief Johny Srouji.

According to Bloomberg, Srouji – the architect of Apple’s A- and M-series chips and one of its most influential leaders – has told CEO Tim Cook he is seriously weighing an exit, signalling he may join another firm if he steps down.

His potential departure comes amid a rapid unraveling of Apple’s upper ranks.

In the past week alone, the heads of AI, interface design, government affairs and legal all announced their exits, adding to a growing list of veterans retiring or decamping to rivals.

The loss of AI chief John Giannandrea followed repeated stumbles with Apple Intelligence and delays to the long-promised Siri overhaul; dozens more AI researchers have since left, frustrated by slow progress and Apple’s growing reliance on Google’s Gemini.

Longtime design leaders have also exited, culminating in interface chief Alan Dye’s move to Meta. Meanwhile, Cook has taken on a greater role overseeing design as Apple retools for future platforms, including smart glasses and home robots.

The turnover has coincided with Apple’s struggles to regain ground in artificial intelligence, an area where Meta, Google and OpenAI have aggressively poached its top engineers with lucrative offers.

Internally, morale within Apple’s AI organisation is said to have dipped sharply following delays to Apple Intelligence and a Siri overhaul now running more than a year behind schedule.

Cook is reportedly attempting to retain Srouji with a substantial pay package and the prospect of expanding his remit – potentially into a chief technology officer role.

But that scenario may hinge on Apple’s readiness to elevate hardware chief John Ternus as Cook’s eventual successor, something insiders say remains unresolved.

The company is also reportedly grappling with a wider engineering talent drain, from AI researchers and silicon architects to key designers working on robotics and next-generation devices.

Several have been recruited directly by Meta and OpenAI, which are pushing deeper into hardware.

With Apple preparing major new categories – including foldables, smart glasses and home robots – the stability of its leadership team has become a pressing concern.
