Setting a price for AI-related services is proving difficult.
An increasing number of firms are selling services that rely on platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini – but setting a price is proving surprisingly difficult for those businesses.
Simon Gooch at Saviynt, an identity management company which is incorporating agentic AI into its services, told the BBC: “Trying to tie someone into a cost model for the next 12 months, two years, three years, it doesn’t make any sense, honestly, because we don’t know.”
Bill Peterson, senior director of product marketing at Sumo Logic, admits that as the AI sector is evolving so rapidly, it’s tough to find a sensible and stable price point.
He explained: “You get into variable pricing, and it’s changing every couple of months. Customers don’t like that. That’s not how anybody builds a budget.”
The industry expert added: “Nobody’s really figured it out.”
Earlier this month, meanwhile, Sam Altman rubbished the idea that AI can solve economic inequality.
Elon Musk, Altman’s tech rival and the owner of X, previously suggested that AI will, one day, make money obsolete – but Altman doesn’t accept that idea.
The 41-year-old billionaire – who is the CEO of OpenAI – told TMZ: “I mean, certainly one of the greatest concerns with AI that I have is around concentration of power, concentration of wealth.
“There are all of these ways where I think it will make a lot of things much cheaper and better, and you don’t have to buy a car, and that’ll be great.”
By contrast, Musk previously claimed that AI will, in ten years’ time, create an “incredible abundance for all”.
The Tesla boss explained to The Economist: “What do you want money for? You want money for goods and services, right? You want money for food, housing, transport, entertainment.
“Well, if that is so abundant that there’s more, that the robots and AI are providing more goods and services than any human could possibly consume, what do you need money for in that case?”
