Google is deepening its foothold in the Nordic education sector, unveiling a broad partnership with schools across Iceland, Sweden and Norway to accelerate responsible AI adoption and improve classroom outcomes.

The initiative focuses on personalized learning, teacher support and strict data-protection compliance – areas where Nordic systems already set international benchmarks.

In Iceland, Google is working with the Ministry of Education on a pilot involving 300 teachers, pairing Gemini for Education with NotebookLM to help customize lessons, streamline planning and raise AI literacy.

The program is designed not just to deploy tools, but to evaluate what educators need to use them ethically and effectively.

Þórdís Jóna Sigurðardóttir, Director General of the Directorate of Education, said in a statement: “This isn’t just about technology; it’s about creating real value in the classroom.”

Sweden is scaling up even faster, as districts across the country are rolling out Gemini for Education to nearly 30,000 students and staff, with teachers reporting significant time savings as AI helps generate tailored, up-to-date learning materials.

Local workshops now train educators on responsible use and guide older students in using AI as a study aid, reinforcing the view that digital literacy must be a shared responsibility.

Norway, meanwhile, has taken a major regulatory step, as the country completed a national Data Protection Impact Assessment covering Google Workspace for Education and ChromeOS, clearing the tools for use in schools while ensuring GDPR compliance.

The centralized assessment replaces hundreds of separate municipal reviews, freeing schools to focus on teaching rather than paperwork.

Across the region, the partnerships reflect a broader shift: governments want innovation, but only with safeguards.

As Iceland’s education minister Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson has said, the goal is to “strengthen education through digital innovation” while keeping learning quality front and centre.
