Walmart has announced a new partnership with OpenAI that will allow customers to browse and purchase products directly through ChatGPT.

The collaboration will let users access Walmart’s catalogue of clothing, packaged food, entertainment, and household goods within ChatGPT by simply typing what they want and tapping a Buy button.

The feature links automatically to users’ existing Walmart or Sam’s Club accounts, streamlining checkout and delivery.

Daniel Danker, Walmart’s executive vice president of AI, product and design, said in a statement: “We view this as an opportunity to deliver convenience in a way that meets customers where they are.”

Danker, who joined Walmart earlier this year from Instacart, added that the company’s goal is to make shopping “as natural as having a conversation”.

While the feature won’t initially support fresh grocery orders, Walmart says the rollout – launching later this fall – will include products from both its own stores and third-party sellers, expanding what users can buy via ChatGPT.

The partnership deepens Walmart’s relationship with OpenAI, following earlier collaborations on AI-powered employee training and operational tools.

The retailer has already been using AI internally to optimise stock management, logistics, and even design new fashion lines faster.

OpenAI, meanwhile, has been steadily transforming ChatGPT into a hub for commerce and productivity.

The company recently announced similar integrations with Etsy and Shopify, further positioning its chatbot as a platform for digital retail.

Analysts say the Walmart partnership could mark the beginning of a new era for online shopping, where consumers skip websites entirely in favour of conversational commerce powered by AI assistants.
