Game Science has announced its sequel to Black Myth: Wukong, Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
The reveal at Gamescom Opening Night Live follows the global success of Black Myth: Wukong, which became the fastest-selling Chinese-made game in history.
According to developer Game Science, Zhong Kui will continue its mission of adapting Chinese mythology for a global audience, this time centred on the legendary demon-quelling figure Zhong Kui.
In a statement, Game Science said: “Upon completing the journey with the Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step – to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design.
“Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors. We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things, while taking a hard look at our past flaws and regrets.
“And to all friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won’t end here.”
The announcement trailer shows the titular hero wielding his iconic sword and summoning spirits to assist in battle.
Unlike Wukong, which drew heavily on Journey to the West, this sequel is set to explore darker, folklore-inspired themes, focusing on Zhong Kui’s role as a vanquisher of demons and protector of the innocent.
Zhong Kui will reportedly share technical DNA with its predecessor, including use of Unreal Engine 5 and high-fidelity combat systems.
While no release date has been confirmed, Game Science has said development is already underway, and is planning to launch Black Myth: Zhong Kui on PC and “mainstream console platforms”.
