‘Elden Ring’ has outsold the entire ‘Dark Souls’ franchise.
Publisher Bandai Namco revealed the fantasy-RPG – which released in 2022 – has sold 28.6 million units worldwide, overtaking the ‘Dark Souls’ series which sold 27 million.
Impressively, ‘Elden Ring’ has managed to reach this impressible milestone in just over two years, while ‘Dark Souls’ and its two sequels released in 2011, 2014 and 2016 respectively.
The game was likely spurred on to overtake the ‘Dark Souls’ franchise by its ‘Shadows of the Erdtree’ expansion, which released in June and pushed ‘Elden Ring’s sales up to 25 million at the time.
While ‘Elden Ring’ isn’t receiving any more major updates past ‘Shadows of the Erdtree’ , developer FromSoftware is not planning to drop the IP any time soon, with the studio recently announcing its online-multiplayer spinoff ‘Elden Ring: Nightreign’ at last week’s (12.12.24) Game Awards.
Bandai Namco teased the title – which is “set a universe parallel to the events of ‘Elden Ring’”- would “thrust players into co-op multiplayer PVE combat against a harsh and unforgiving world” when it launches on all major platforms in 2025.
The studio said: “Teaming up in squads of three – or daring to go solo – they must outlast a three day-and-night cycle, making split decisions about combat and exploration across changing maps to become strong enough to take down terrifying bosses at the end of each day.”
