TikTok users in the UK can now pay to remove adverts from the app for the first time ever.

The social media giant is introducing a new subscription option called TikTok Ad-Free, which will allow users to scroll through videos without seeing adverts for a monthly fee of £3.99.

The feature launches from May 11, although TikTok has confirmed the rollout will happen gradually over the coming months, meaning some users may not see the option immediately.

The subscription is completely optional, and TikTok will continue to offer its standard ad-supported version for free. The ad-free tier is only available to users aged 18 and over.

TikTok said the only difference between the paid and free versions is the removal of adverts, with no additional features or exclusive content included as part of the subscription.

Users who want to activate the feature can do so through the Settings menu in the TikTok app, and they will be able to switch back to the free version at any time.

The move follows similar strategies introduced by rival social media platforms including Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, both of which already offer paid subscriptions to remove adverts.

Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney also charge extra for ad-free viewing tiers.

TikTok stressed that advertising remains an important source of support for UK businesses using the platform.

According to the company, small UK businesses generated an estimated £1.2 billion in revenue through advertising on TikTok in 2022, while the food and drink sector saw the biggest impact.

TikTok Managing Director Kris Boger told The Sun: “Choice for our community and growth for UK businesses go hand in hand on TikTok.

“Advertising on our platform is already helping thousands of British businesses reach new customers, increase sales and create jobs, while our new ad-free option gives people greater control over their experience.

“Together, this ensures we continue to deliver real economic impact while giving our community the flexibility to engage with TikTok in the way that suits them.”

A 2023 report by Oxford Economics estimated that small business activity on TikTok contributed around £1.6 billion to the UK economy in 2022 and supported approximately 32,000 jobs.
