Perplexity has launched its Comet browser worldwide for free.
Originally introduced in July for subscribers paying up to $200 a month, Comet is now available to everyone at no cost, with the AI start-up pledging that the browser will remain free forever.
Unlike traditional browsers, Comet builds AI directly into the browsing experience.
Perplexity has described it as a personal assistant that “travels the web with you,” helping with everyday tasks such as shopping, booking trips, and research.
The browser integrates Perplexity’s AI search and chat tools, offering contextual answers and automation while users navigate the web.
The company is also pushing a premium add-on called Comet Plus, which bundles curated news content from outlets including The Washington Post, CNN, Conde Nast, and Le Monde.
Comet Plus costs $5 per month for standard users, though it is included with Perplexity’s paid Pro and Max subscriptions.
The launch puts Perplexity into direct competition with tech giants who are rapidly infusing AI into their browsers.
Google has rolled out Gemini-powered features in Chrome, Opera recently introduced its Neon AI browser, and Arc’s developers are pushing conversational agents into their product.
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, has likened Comet’s strategy to “reimagining the internet itself,” positioning the browser as the company’s next major play after ChatGPT-style search.
By removing the paywall, Perplexity is betting big on mass adoption — and potentially taking on Chrome’s dominance in a way that few browsers have managed before.
