OpenAI is making an aggressive push to expand its footprint in India, announcing that it will offer a free year of ChatGPT Go to users across the country starting November 4.
The offer coincides with the company’s first DevDay Exchange event in India and marks its latest attempt to capture one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.
ChatGPT Go – launched in August as OpenAI’s most affordable paid tier at ₹399 (around $4.80) per year – provides higher message limits, image generation, and larger file uploads than the free version.
The promotion highlights India’s growing importance to the San Francisco-based company.
OpenAI said in a statement: “India is ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing markets.”
The company added subscriptions have more than doubled in the country following ChatGPT Go’s debut.
Since then, the tier has rolled out to nearly 90 global markets, but India remains the focal point of OpenAI’s user expansion strategy.
The move also reflects intensifying competition among AI platforms in the region.
Rival Perplexity AI recently began offering free access to its premium plan through a partnership with telecom giant Bharti Airtel, while Google is providing a free year of its Gemini AI Pro service to students.
India’s large English-speaking population and rapidly digitising economy make it an increasingly valuable testing ground for AI companies.
By lowering the barrier to entry, OpenAI aims to build loyalty, attract new users, and collect richer data to improve future models.
With over 1.4 billion potential users, India represents the next major battleground in the global race to dominate the consumer AI landscape.
