OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.1, a major upgrade to its flagship model lineup that boosts reasoning, clarity, and customization.

The update refreshes both of ChatGPT’s primary models: GPT-5.1 Instant, now the default option for most users, and GPT-5.1 Thinking, the system’s advanced reasoning model.

Instant has been redesigned to be “warmer, more conversational,” and far better at following instructions.

GPT-5.1 also introduces adaptive reasoning, allowing the model to momentarily “think” before answering harder questions – yielding sharper performance in coding and math benchmarks like AIME 2025 and Codeforces.

GPT-5.1 Thinking receives deeper changes, as the model now varies its chain-of-thought duration based on problem difficulty, responding twice as fast on simple tasks and taking twice as long on complex ones.

OpenAI has said the result is more reliable reasoning, cleaner explanations, and fewer opaque technical terms, making the most capable GPT-5 model easier to understand for everyday and professional use.

Its default tone has also been tuned to feel “warmer and more empathetic”.

Beyond raw capability upgrades, OpenAI is rolling out its largest-ever expansion of tone controls, including a new suite of “personality” custimizations designed to make ChatGPT feel more human and more configurable than ever.

New preset personalities – Professional, Candid, and Quirky – join revamped versions of existing ones, while a new experimental tuning panel lets users directly adjust traits like warmth, conciseness, emoji use, and scannability.

ChatGPT can also detect when a user keeps requesting a certain tone and proactively offer to adopt it permanently.

GPT-5.1 launches this week for Plus, Pro, Go, Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers, with a gradual rollout to free users.

API versions will follow shortly, and GPT-5 models will remain available under a legacy option for three months as users compare versions.

OpenAI says GPT-5.1 marks a step toward making ChatGPT “smarter, clearer, and more personal” – and signals a future where users can shape not only what their AI knows, but how it speaks.
