OpenAI has struck a major partnership with PayPal to integrate the fintech giant’s digital wallet directly into ChatGPT.

The deal, finalised over the weekend, will allow ChatGPT users to browse, buy, and pay for items seamlessly using PayPal – marking a key milestone in OpenAI’s push to turn its chatbot into an interactive commercial platform.

The integration will roll out in early 2026, according to CNBC.

PayPal CEO Alex Chriss said in a statement given to the outlet: “We’ve got hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who now will be able to click the Buy with PayPal button on ChatGPT and have a safe and secure checkout experience.”

The move positions PayPal as a backbone for the next wave of “agentic AI commerce” – where AI systems act as intelligent shopping assistants that can search, recommend, and even purchase items for users.

With more than 700 million weekly ChatGPT users, OpenAI is rapidly expanding its ecosystem beyond information and content into real-time transactions.

PayPal’s network of verified merchants will gain instant access to ChatGPT’s marketplace, while the company will handle payment routing, authentication, and fraud prevention behind the scenes.

Users can pay through linked cards, bank accounts, or stored balances, and will retain access to PayPal’s protections, including package tracking and dispute resolution.

The partnership follows OpenAI’s recent e-commerce integrations with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, which allow users to shop conversationally through ChatGPT.

By embedding PayPal, OpenAI effectively closes the loop between search, recommendation, and checkout – transforming ChatGPT into a full-service AI shopping agent.

Chriss called it “a whole new paradigm for shopping,” adding that verified consumers and merchants make it “the safest, most trusted way to transact in the AI era”.
