The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the U.S. in 2025.

According to sales data from Circana, the Switch 2 led U.S. hardware sales despite a challenging economic backdrop that saw higher prices and cautious consumer spending.

The strong performance helped lift overall U.S. video game hardware spending by nine per cent year-on-year, offsetting declines seen across rival platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The result is notable given the turbulence the industry faced late in the year.

November spending dipped sharply as tariffs introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump and rising component costs pushed up console prices, prompting many buyers to delay upgrades.

Even so, Nintendo’s latest hardware maintained momentum through the crucial holiday period, underlining sustained demand for the Switch 2 less than a year after launch.

That strength is mirrored overseas as in Japan, the Switch 2 sold 3.78 million units in 2025, making it the fastest-selling console in the country’s history and accounting for more than half of all home console sales.

It reached almost one million units in its first week on sale and surpassed 10.36 million units globally within its first four months – the highest early sales figure of any Nintendo platform to date.

Software performance has also reinforced the console’s success.

Nintendo titles once again dominated Japan’s physical sales charts, with Mario Kart World leading the market and Pokémon Legends Z-A close behind across Switch and Switch 2.

By contrast, PlayStation 5 sales in Japan fell 60 per cent year-on-year, despite the launch of a cheaper local model.
