Nick Grimshaw has teamed up with Uber Eats and Mowgli to encourage families to talk more at Christmas, after new research showed most of Gen Z are distracted by tech during dinner.

According to Uber Eats, 37 per cent of Brits struggle to make conversation at the Christmas table, even though most consider themselves good conversationalists.

The study highlights the growing impact of phones during meals, with 65 per cent saying they are regularly distracted by technology, and more than half wanting more meaningful conversations with friends and family.

To help, Uber Eats and Mowgli have created a set of festive conversation cards, designed with broadcaster Nick Grimshaw.

The cards aim to move diners beyond small talk, with simple prompts about memories, traditions and personal stories.

Grimshaw said good food and fewer distractions are the key to better conversations, adding that he hopes the cards help people “switch off the screen and turn up the chat”.

He said in a statement: “I love when people open up and share their stories, and I firmly believe that the best conversations happen when people are relaxed, enjoying good food, and have their phones at bay, being present in the moment.

“I’m thrilled to team up with Uber Eats and Mowgli to inject some life back into dinner table discussions, giving people the tools they need to switch off the screen and turn up the chat.”

The partnership also reflects widening generational divides in what people want to talk about. Millennials prefer topics like food and fitness, Gen Z gravitates toward social media and memes, while Boomers tend to focus on holidays – making common ground harder to find across the table.

A limited number of Mowgli delivery orders on Uber Eats will include Grimshaw’s conversation cards from this week.

One group of customers will also be able to join him for a hosted dinner on December 16, with seats available through Uber Eats UK’s Instagram.
