Meta has unveiled a new flagship artificial intelligence (AI) model, Muse Spark.

The model is the first to emerge from Meta’s revamped AI division, a unit the company has poured billions into over the past year.

Muse Spark significantly outperforms Meta’s previous systems in writing and reasoning tasks, placing it close to leading models from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic.

However, the model still falls short in coding ability – an increasingly important benchmark as competitors double down on developer-focused AI tools.

The launch comes at a critical moment for Meta. As Forrester analyst Mike Proulx noted to the New York Times: “The new model and how it performs is really at the center of Meta’s A.I. credibility.”

Muse Spark is a test of whether 41-year-old Meta boss Zuckerberg’s massive spending spree is paying off.

That investment has been eye-watering. Zuckerberg has committed up to $600 billion towards infrastructure like data centres, while Meta expects to spend as much as $135 billion this year alone – nearly double last year’s figure.

Muse Spark is already being rolled out via Meta’s standalone AI app, with plans to integrate it into WhatsApp, Instagram and its smart glasses.

Unlike earlier models such as Llama, which were open source, Muse Spark is closed – signalling a strategic shift as Meta balances openness with competitive pressure.

The model was developed in a rapid nine-month sprint under new AI chief Alexandr Wang, part of a broader leadership shake-up following the underwhelming release of Llama 4.

Despite the progress, Meta is tempering expectations. The company says Muse Spark is designed to be “small and fast” while still capable of tackling complex problems, and confirmed that more powerful models – including one codenamed Watermelon – are already in development.
