Apple is reportedly preparing to upgrade its second-generation iPhone Air next year with a second rear camera.
According to reliable leaker Digital Chat Station, the next iPhone Air in 2026 will retain its thin, lightweight design but add a 48MP ultrawide lens alongside its existing 48MP main camera, addressing one of the most common complaints about the first model’s single-lens setup.
The dual-camera system will reportedly be positioned horizontally, rather than vertically as on the iPhone 17 series, marking a distinct design choice for Apple’s mid-tier lineup.
The addition of an ultrawide lens would significantly enhance the device’s photographic versatility, offering improved landscape and group shots without relying on digital cropping.
It’s still unclear whether the supposed iPhone Air 2 will support spatial video capture – one of the standout features of recent Pro models – but analysts say the change hints that Apple intends to make the Air a more capable everyday camera phone rather than a niche design experiment.
The move comes amid reports of major production cuts to the original iPhone Air due to weak demand.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s suppliers will reduce output by more than 80 per cent by early 2026, with some component orders already canceled.
Industry reports from Nikkei and Mizuho Securities suggest the device has suffered from “virtually no demand,” as consumers gravitate toward the more fully featured iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models.
Apple’s supposed struggles mirror those of Samsung, whose ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge also failed to resonate with buyers.
Still, the iPhone Air 2 could give Apple another chance to refine the concept, pairing the line’s elegant form factor with camera features closer to its flagship devices.
