Google has signed a deal to support the development of seven new small nuclear reactors in the United States to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence.
The tech behemoth has partnered with energy startup Kairos Power to purchase 500 megawatts of power from a collection of new reactors expected to be operational between 2030 and 2035.
This power purchase agreement aims to hasten the advancement of novel nuclear technologies, similar to how technology companies championed the adoption of wind and solar power in the 2010s.
Google said: “Since pioneering the first corporate purchase agreements for renewable electricity over a decade ago, Google has played a pivotal role in accelerating clean energy solutions, including the next generation of advanced clean technologies.
“Nuclear solutions offer a clean, round-the-clock power source that can help us reliably meet electricity demands with carbon-free energy every hour of every day.
“Advancing these power sources in close partnership with supportive local communities will rapidly drive the decarbonisation of electricity grids around the world.”
Microsoft and Amazon have already invested in nuclear energy to keep up with the ever-growing demand for AI.
