Apple is rolling out a new customization feature in iOS 26.1, giving users more control over the company’s divisive new Liquid Glass design.

The update, now available in the fourth developer beta of iOS 26.1, introduces a simple setting that allows users to toggle between two visual options – Clear and Tinted – effectively reducing the transparency effects that define Apple’s latest interface overhaul.

The change applies across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 26.1, marking the company’s latest effort to respond to user feedback following one of its most significant visual redesigns in over a decade.

Introduced earlier this year, Liquid Glass replaced Apple’s long-standing flat design with a layered, translucent aesthetic.

While praised for its depth and realism, some users found it distracting or difficult to read, especially in low-contrast areas like notifications or the Apple Music interface.

Apple confirmed to TechCrunch that developers who have already implemented Liquid Glass in their apps will automatically have the user’s preference applied.

Users can find the new option under Settings – Display and Brightness – Liquid Glass on iPhone, or System Settings – Appearance on Mac.

The Tinted mode increases opacity across system UI elements, improving visibility for text and icons.

The move mirrors Apple’s earlier approach to user customization – such as when it let users revert Safari’s address bar placement after backlash in 2021.

With iOS 26.1, the company is once again balancing bold design with accessibility and user choice, softening the edges of an ambitious visual shift that has divided opinion among Apple fans.
