Apple has reportedly paused development on a revamped version of its Vision Pro headset to focus instead on AI-powered smart glasses.
According to Bloomberg, Apple had been working on a lighter, cheaper Vision Pro model – codenamed N100 – for release in 2027, but the company is now said to be reallocating staff to accelerate progress on smart glasses, a category it sees as more strategically important for the next decade.
Sources say Apple is developing at least two types of glasses. The first, known internally as N50, will pair with an iPhone and lack its own display, with an unveiling possible as early as 2026 ahead of a 2027 release.
A second model, equipped with a built-in display, is also reportedly in the works and could rival Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which debuted in 2023.
Apple is reportedly pushing to bring this version to market sooner than planned.
The supposed decision reflects growing recognition inside Apple that smart glasses may eventually replace smartphones as a primary computing platform.
However, it also underscores the lukewarm reception to the Vision Pro, a $3,499 mixed-reality headset widely criticised for being heavy, costly, and lacking in content.
Apple is still expected to ship a modest refresh of the current model later this year with a faster chip.
Apple’s glasses will reportedly include AI-driven voice controls, speakers for media playback, cameras for recording, and potential health-tracking features.
The company are also expected to rely heavily on a rebuilt Siri, due in 2026, to handle natural voice commands and on-screen actions.
While Apple’s pivot highlights its urgency in catching up with Meta -which has already releasesd multiple successful glasses models – it also signals that the Vision Pro may ultimately serve as a stopgap rather than the future of Apple’s wearable computing ambitions.
