Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first-ever touchscreen MacBook Pro.
According to Bloomberg, the next laptops – powered by Apple’s next-generation M6 chip – could debut in late 2026 or early 2027 with an OLED touchscreen.
The project, said to be code-named K114 and K116, will see Apple embrace touch functionality long after rivals like Microsoft, Dell, and Lenovo made it a standard feature in premium laptops.
Sources suggest the new MacBook Pros will drop the LCD display in favor of OLED, a first for the Mac lineup, offering improved color accuracy, thinner panels, and energy efficiency.
The supposed redesign will also replace the notch with a hole-punch camera, similar to the Dynamic Island on the iPhone, and introduce a reinforced hinge system to minimize screen movement when touched – a common issue among touchscreen laptops.
Despite the addition of touch functionality, Apple reportedly plans to retain a full keyboard and trackpad, ensuring users can still rely on traditional input methods.
The move marks a significant philosophical reversal for Apple, with the late Steve Jobs famously saying in 2010 that “touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical”, arguing that touchscreen laptops were uncomfortable to use.
His CEO successor Tim Cook later compared combining a tablet and laptop to “melding a toaster and a fridge”.
Yet as iPad sales slow and touchscreen PCs become the norm, Apple appears ready to adapt.
Analysts expect the M6-powered MacBook Pro to cost several hundred dollars more than current M5 models, which start at $1,599.
Apple is reportedly watching market reaction closely before expanding touchscreen technology to other Macs.
