Tim Cook is to step down as Apple CEO.

Cook, who first joined the tech company back in 1998 and has been CEO for the past 15 years after taking over from the firm’s late co-founder Steve Jobs, will take up the role of executive chairman at the California behemoth.

He will remain in his current role until September 1, when he will be replaced by John Ternus – the current head of Apple’s hardware engineering department.

Apple says that Cook will “assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world”.

Cook’s decision to step down from his post follows months of speculation that Apple – which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary – was searching for a successor to him.

In a statement, the outgoing CEO said: “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company.

“I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world.”

Cook also hailed his successor as a “visionary” with “the soul of an innovator”.

He said of Ternus: “He is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character.”

During a quarter of a century at Apple, Ternus has worked on all of the major products the company has released – including every generation of the iPad, several generations of the iPhone, and the launches of both AirPods and the Apple Watch.

In a statement on Monday (20.04.26), he said: “I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come.”
