OpenAI is set open its first permanent London office in 2027.
The ChatGPT developer has revealed that the site will be located in King’s Cross and will have capacity for 544 workers when it opens its doors next year.
At present, OpenAI has around 200 employees in the UK capital working in areas such as research, engineering, customer support, policy, communications, marketing and sales – and it is seeking to grow its British teams in these sectors.
However, plans for the new office come just days after the US technology giant announced that it was shelving its Stargate UK project – which was due to be based at Cobalt Park in North Tyneside – amid concerns surrounding energy costs and regulation.
OpenAI said that the plans would be put on hold until the “right conditions” permit long-term investment in the UK’s infrastructure.
Despite this, the tech firm insisted that the London office opening reflects its “long-term commitment to the UK”, with OpenAI declaring recently that it wants London to become its biggest research hub outside of the United States.
Phoebe Thacker, the firm’s global head of data research programmes and London site lead, said: “The UK has an incredible depth of talent and a strong track record in AI.
“London is already a key hub for our research and teams, and this new office gives us the space to keep building here.
“We’re seeing real momentum in how businesses, developers and institutions across the UK are using AI, and we want to support that growth.
“This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the UK and the role it can play in shaping how AI is developed safely and used to benefit people all over the world.”
OpenAI’s office will span 88,500 square feet at Regent’s Quarter in King’s Cross – a location that is also home to Google’s head office and the soon-to-open European HQ, which will serve as the hub for the company’s DeepMind AI division.
