Blizzard is reportedly working on turning StarCraft into a shooter with South Korean publisher Nexon.
According to The Korea Economic Daily, the unannounced project has assembled a dedicated internal team within its shooter division to work on the game.
Notably, the report suggests the project is being led by a long-time StarCraft modder, hinting at a development approach that leans heavily on community knowledge of Blizzard’s iconic sci-fi universe.
Blizzard itself has yet to confirm the collaboration.
If accurate, the move would pair Blizzard’s storied IP with a publisher that has recently gained credibility in the global shooter market.
Nexon owns Swedish studio Embark Studios, best known for The Finals and ARC Raiders, both of which have helped position the company as a serious player beyond its traditional Asian markets.
Caution is warranted, however, as Blizzard’s history with StarCraft shooters is littered with false starts.
StarCraft: Ghost, announced in 2002 as a third-person action game, was ultimately cancelled in 2006 after years of delays.
A second attempt, codenamed Ares and reportedly inspired by Battlefield, was shelved in 2019 as Blizzard redirected resources toward Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.
More recently, Bloomberg reported in 2024 that Blizzard had quietly restarted work on a StarCraft shooter internally, led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay.
It remains unclear whether the Nexon project is connected to that earlier Blizzard-led effort or represents an entirely new take.
The reported geographic split and Nexon’s ownership of development suggest it could be a fresh iteration rather than a continuation.
There is also precedent for partnerships stalling, as Nexon previously collaborated with Square Enix on a Final Fantasy spin-off that failed to progress beyond early planning.
