Apple is preparing a new round of software updates that will make iPhones and iPads work more smoothly with non‑Apple accessories. The changes are part of iOS 26.3 and iPadOS 26.3, both currently in public beta and expected to launch in early January 2026, as per MacRumors.

The updates introduce two interoperability features aimed at opening the door to third‑party earbuds and wearables.

The first, called Proximity Pairing, lets devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Buds connect to an iPhone or iPad through an automatic pop‑up prompt. Bringing the accessory close to the device triggers the pairing window, removing the usual step‑by‑step process inside Bluetooth settings.

The second feature, Notifications Forwarding, extends a capability previously limited to the Apple Watch. Once the update arrives, iPhones will be able to send incoming alerts to supported third‑party fitness bands and smartwatches, including models like the Galaxy Watch. Only one wearable can receive mirrored notifications at a time, so users won’t be able to forward alerts to an Apple Watch and another smartwatch simultaneously.

Both additions are being rolled out to meet interoperability rules in the European Union and will only be available in EU countries at launch.
