Nintendo is reportedly increasing production of the Switch 2.

According to Bloomberg, the Japanese gaming giant has asked suppliers to manufacture as many as 25 million units by March 2026.

If achieved, this would mark one of the strongest first-year performances for a gaming console in the industry’s history.

Nintendo began assembling the Switch 2 in late 2024 and is now said to be scaling up manufacturing to meet overwhelming demand heading into the holidays.

Analysts had predicted first-year sales of around 17.6 million units, but insiders say Nintendo expects to sell roughly 20 million consoles this fiscal year alone, with additional stock carrying into the next.

Shares in Nintendo rose more than two per cent in Tokyo following reports of the increased production targets.

The company’s stock has already climbed 50 per cent over the past year, fuleled by the console’s record-setting debut and sustained consumer interest.

The $450 hybrid console, which can function as both a handheld and docked system, builds on the success of the original 2017 Switch.

Its full compatibility with existing Switch titles has given it a massive software ecosystem from launch, eliminating one of the biggest challenges new consoles face.

Nintendo’s supposed strategy also seemingly reflects lessons learned from Sony and Microsoft, whose PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launches were constrained by pandemic-era supply shortages in 2020.

By ensuring robust inventory and holding prices steady despite new U.S. tariffs, Nintendo is positioning the Switch 2 as a global success story.

In the U.S., sales are tracking 77 per cent ahead of the original Switch’s launch trajectory, according to Circana data.

With the launch of Pokémon Legends: Z-A expected to drive further momentum, analysts say Nintendo could soon surpass its own conservative forecasts.
