OpenAI will soon allow verified adult users to generate erotic and explicit content through ChatGPT.
The new feature – which begins rolling out in December 2025 – will be available only to users who verify their age and opt in to access mature content.
In a post on X, Altman said: “As we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”
He added: “If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).”
The update will allow users to generate romantic stories, roleplay scenarios, and adult-themed creative writing, while continuing to ban non-consensual, violent, or illegal material.
OpenAI says it will deploy strong safeguards, including advanced detection tools and moderation filters, to prevent misuse and protect underage users.
The company framed the change as part of a push to support creative professionals and writers who want to responsibly explore adult themes using AI tools.
It also follows similar moves from rival platforms experimenting with age-restricted generative models.
However, digital safety experts have warned that OpenAI’s decision could invite regulatory challenges, particularly around preventing the creation of AI-generated explicit imagery or deepfakes.
Still, industry analysts view the change as a sign of the mainstreaming of mature AI content, suggesting the technology is evolving beyond productivity into personalised creative and emotional expression.
